Vai Te Lavar As Mãos

What is a family heirloom?

Sitting around the table for lunch has always been the most important time of the day. We sat at 12:00, clean hands and no hats. The menu was dictated by my grandparents and it was always indescribably good.

Later in life I found out that most of the recipes we ate I wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. It was food my grandparents ate in their childhood, recipes traditionally from the German and Italian colonies, made for peasants, with miraculous use of the ingredients that were available at the time.

To me those recipes are our most precious heirlooms. This book was made to gather all of them in one place and in the end become a heirloom itself.

All of the illustrations were done by memory using watercolour and ink.

Made in 2017 for my Bookbinding class at RISD.
